Walmart has double the market share of any other retailer in north Texas, according to recent statistics from The Shelby Report.

With nearly 38% market share, Walmart has a big lead over Kroger at 14% and Albertsons/Safeway at 13%.
In January 2018, Shelby’s market area of north Texas/Louisiana/Arkansas/Oklahoma (Dallas, Fort Worth, Tyler, Longview, Shreveport) had total annual retail sales of $20.4 billion.


According to The Shelby Report, retail market share compared with year-ago levels:

  • Walmart: 205 stores, 37.5% market share, down 0.5 points;
  • Kroger: 108 stores, 14.1% market share, down 0.2 points;
  • Albertsons/Safeway: 114 stores, 12.5% market share, down 0.2 points;
  • Brookshire Grocery: 125 stores, 8.2% market share, up 0.5 points;
  • Grocers Supply (wholesale): 80 stores, 4.2% market share, up 0.4 points;
  • SuperTarget: 28 stores, 4.1% market share, down 0.1 points;
  • H-E-B, 17 stores, 3.6% market share, no change;
  • Fiesta Mart, 34 stores, 2.9% market share, newly added;
  • Associated Wholesale Grocers (wholesale): 50 stores, 2.1% market share, down 1.9 points;
  • WinCo Foods, 9 stores, 2.1% market share, up 0.6 points;
  • Aldi, 60 stores, 2% market share, newly added;
  • Brookshire Bros: 62 stores, 1.9% market share, down 0.2 points;
  • Whole Foods: 13 stores, 1.9% market share, up 0.2 points;
  • Grocery Supply: 27 stores, 1.4% market share, no change;
  • United Supermarkets: 10 stores, 1.4% market share, no change; and 
  • Nature’s Best: 19 stores, 1.1% market share, newly added.
