Avocados have their sights set on No. 1.

The Hass Avocado Board, Mission Viejo, Calif., developed its five-year strategic plan, which includes a new goal of making hass avocados the No. 1 consumed fruit in the U.S., achieved through a five-point strategy that includes:

  • building demand;
  • nutrition research;
  • supply and demand data;
  • sustainability; and
  • industry engagement.

“It’s a pretty bold plan,” Emiliano Escobedo, executive director, told The Packer. “We have to bring everybody on board under this new vision … so that we can all work together.”

The Hass Avocado Board’s data tracks back to 2004, when 682 million pounds of avocados were shipped in the U.S. We surpassed that number in the U.S. by mid-April.
