The award, presented at the Washington, D.C.-based organization’s Midwinter Executive Conference Jan. 22 in Scottsdale, Ariz., was established in 1961 in honor of President Hoover, inspired by his humanitarian campaigns in the food industry.
“Al Plamann is legendary among wholesalers and his abiding commitment to serving independent retailers mirrors his altruistic regard for the individual,” said FMI president and chief executive officer Leslie Sarasin, in a news release.
Plamann was honored for exceptional community outreach programs, including an internship program for graduating high school seniors, service to the homeless through the Weingart Center Association, the Boy Scouts of America, City of Hope and other community-based groups.
“Al drives the company by leading by example, and we emulate his approach,” said Bob Ling, president of Unified Grocers, in a news release. “Service to our members and the communities in which we conduct business is engrained in our company culture.”
