FirstFruits tries to 'take a bite out of hunger'

FirstFruits Marketing aims to help end hunger through its trademarked Take a Bite Out of Hunger program.

FirstFruitsIn its third year of the program, the Yakima, Wash.-based grower-owned sales agency started this year’s promotion in early February.

FirstFruits created the program to help feed the needy and call attention to the problem of food insecurity, according to a news release.

FirstFruits MarketingFirstFruits MarketingFirstFruits Marketing aims to help end hunger through its trademarked Take a Bite Out of Hunger retail program.FirstFruits donates fresh apples in a retailer’s name to local food banks with the retailer contributing the cost of freight, according to the release.

“We enjoy helping our retail partners make these donations and have received great feedback from the food banks that are always appreciative of receiving fresh and healthy produce,” Dennis Jackson, FirstFruits’ category manager, said in the release.

Last year, the program donated more than 250,000 pounds of apples to food banks of the retailers’ designation in the stores’ local trade areas.

Participating retailers include Netherlands-based Ahold NV’s Ahold USA Inc., Carlisle, Pa., JH Harvey Co. Inc., Nashville, Ga., Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co., Montvale, N.J., Pathmark Stores Inc., Carteret, N.J., Dave’s Fresh Marketplace, East Greenwich, R.I., and Sweetbay Supermarkets, Tampa, Fla.
