Produce Retailer Blog
Give them a reason to stay
Wow. That’s what I typed when I checked in to the Fresh by Brookshire’s store on Facebook.
I had high expectations and this store did not disappoint.
There are three entrances that lead right into the produce department and that’s for a good reason. The produce department sets the tone for this store focused on excellent food.
Tyler, Texas-based Brookshire Grocery Co. held nothing back with the store’s design, earning high marks for energy conservation with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The store earns high points with local real estate agents, too. General manager Steve Delello said it’s not uncommon to see agents bring potential home buyers to eat a chef-prepared meal after showing a house nearby.
The whole reason for this store resonated with me. I’m from a rural area originally, and got my first job out of college in a small Texas town about an hour from Houston.
My husband and I used to load up a cooler and drive to Katy, Texas, to do our weekly shopping because we found the selection at our local store a little thin.
This Fresh by Brookshire’s store shows what an independent retailer can do to inspire the community and keep those shopper dollars local.
Produce features prominently in successful independent operations. See our story on page 12 to hear how other independent retailers reach their customers through exceptional service and exceptional produce.
